CLICK ON THE DRAWINGS TO VIEW THE SLIDESHOW Victorian homes offer a charm and nostalgia like no other style of residential architecture. Typically they are designed with a ten foot ceiling on the main floor with tall narrow double hung windows. Queen Anne style in particular have dancing roof lines, turrets and as much gingerbread as you can take. You can still enjoy this old classic architecture while adding modern day ammenities to merge the two worlds. Craftsman or Arts and Crafts style homes have a big and bulky presence. With large tapered columns, exaggerated overhangs, shakes or board and batton accents, with rich dark colors this style has a masculine feel. Shed roofs or dormers typically enhance the broad roof lines. Originating in the early 1900's, this style has made a big comeback in the last 5 years, adding new modern flair to this classic design. French country style homes have a rich elegence. Typically they have a very steep pitched roof with rounded accents or dormers and short arched overhangs The heaviest materials anchor the bottom of the house, while lighter materials such as stucco grace the upper portions of these sophisticated designs. Ornate detailing such as brackets, trim or wrought iron complement the rest of the home. English tudor style homes are very recognizable because of their distinct stucco and dark brown half timbers. Complex, steep rooflines help to define this almost medieval styled home. Lots of details such as brackets, stone and rough sawn cedar boards give these beautiful homes timeless character and grace.
Beautiful in their simplicity, farm houses are very inviting. They welcome you with expansive porches and cozy spaces.
Barn style doors accent these homes well with basic siding, board and batton or entirely wrapped in brick. Narrow windows may have shutters and flower boxes or left with no detailing at all. Reminding you of drinking lemonade on grandmas porch it may just feet like home.
Prairie style homes were established by Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1800's. Also referred to as "organic architecture" these homes are designed only in color schemes found in nature. The long sweeping overhangs and extremely low pitch hipped rooflines accentuate the horizontal lines of the entire home. Planters, wing walls, clerestory windows and the famous Frank Lloyd Wright style stainded glass are common details found in the original prairie style homes. |
